Hello! My name is Aida Elena Mejía. I adopted Mayagüez almost nine years ago when I moved here during Christmas 2008, after the birth of my daughter Violeta. Becoming a fulltime mom brought some challenges, but I managed to graduate with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership while working from home for a number of ventures including consulting businesses, freelance writers and artists, and non-profit organizations. Having collaborated with the Miranda Foundation, I have firsthand knowledge about the incredible work these organizations do for our communities and the country. I love living in Mayagüez, and now that I’ve been presented with this amazing opportunity to serve my community as the Director of Operations at the Mayagüez Children’s Library, I am fully committed to continue its legacy of excellence. It is a privilege and a mission that I treasure.
Director of Programs & Community Outreach
Valeriano Weyler Ramos
Hello! My name is Valeriano Weyler. I was born in the Canary Islands on the West coast of Africa. Although my first visit to Puerto Rico was in 2008, it wasn’t until 2014 that I finally moved here after completing my studies in Madrid, Spain. I have a B.A. in Communications and an M.A. in Sociocultural Analysis. In addition, I have completed my academic career with a Graduate Diploma in Cultural Studies, plus diverse continuing education courses in the fields of journalism, education, human rights and community development.
From my professional background I can highlight my experience as a journalist in projects such as the Ibero-American Educational and Cultural Television (Madrid), the newspaper Compartir es Vivir / Le Monde diplomatique Puerto Rico (Aguadilla) and the community radio station Radio Almenara (Madrid). I have worked as a teacher since 2017, teaching photojournalism workshops to low-income youth (Instituto de Educación Vocacional, Arecibo), and teaching Film and Media Literacy at the Academy of the Immaculate Conception of Mayagüez.
I am ready to assume the responsibility of Director of Programs and Community Outreach with great enthusiasm, aware that I join a project of vital importance for the cultural and educational development of Puerto Rico. I believe through offering our community excellent library services and programs we can help ensure the building of a better country and world. With great commitment and conviction I’m going to work on this project.
